Not especially rare, and if he paid 240 to have reconed he is an utter bozo...value about a hundred.Not bad speakers, just nothing special.
For 240 you can often get Santanas. Much better. Especially if you upgrade the tweeter.

Old Guy, remember that everything in Canada is a more expensive. I was pleased as can be to get a set of 1233's for $550.

Okay, so they may be worth 150 in Canada, which I doubt. But spending 240 to recone is still utter stupidity.
They are average speakers, nothing great.
Better than junk, but not up to Altec's real stuff.
Remember, Altec bought mostly CTS and stuffed into Altec boxes on the low end stuff. Even the few Altec made woofers with cast frames aren't up to 414's.
I bought a pair of Madrids (basically Santanas) for 75 bucks. Ok, not an average deal. But if you settle it's like marrying an ugly woman with a bad personality at age 18. Better off to keep looking. Deals are out there.
Not trying to be hostile, just honest.

Thanks for the info about CTS. I often wondered about those low-end speakers. I was looking through an really old Altec brochure, and they had those low-end speakers, whose drivers that I have never seen. I think I always come across stronger than I intend...but having run a business for years being straight seems the best policy...more than once customers went directions I advised against...but a number came back asking for skilled help to straighten out what they bought.
Insisting on quality isn't a negative thing long run. A cheap deal can leave a bitter taste for a long time...
Model 14's don't cost that much and are way better.
If they are still there, (doubtful) you could buy these and ship for maybe 350...again WAY better. These are 414 and the little multicell tweet.
